Painting with Light and Film

I am an artist. My training was in illustration and graphic design and I worked in these fields for many years. I currently earn my living as a corporate photographer. This special section of my site is for my art photography. Photography is painting with light. I have chosen film as my paint and antique cameras as my brush to make these pictorial paintings.

For me, the type of art that I prefer has a very tactile and organic aspect to it. It has to be a true craft created as much by hand as possible. I don’t create art on a computer. That doesn’t mean that I don’t use a computer but I prefer being able to feel the brush, smell the paper and the paint and have all of my senses involved in the process. Film photography does this for me too. I use medium format cameras and large format cameras that run only on springs and gears. No batteries, no memory cards and no auto setting anywhere. I love how the antique lenses combined with the film renders the photographs differently than any digital camera ever could. There is the feel of loading the film into the camera, the tactile nature of actually handling these metal or wood beauties and the sound of the click when you attempt to capture your vision. Then, there is the process of developing the film which has its own sensory activators. Every step of the way, the process is physically touched and produced by me. This is a slow and deliberate process that brings peace to my soul.

Prints
I hope that you enjoy looking through my artwork. If you decide that you would like one of my images, I would be happy to make a print for you. All prints are done by me, the artist, with modern archival processes which include the inks and paper. These are prints that would be accepted by galleries and museums. These are not your cheap drugstore prints. All prints will be hand signed by me and will have a white border around them.

Mattes
You can order the print alone or you can order it with a matte. I use white archival 8 ply (extra thick) matte board for all of my matting. Each print will have four inches of matte all the way around the image and will be supplied with an archival foam backing board to make the print ready for framing.

(shipping is free for all prints and matted prints. Please allow 2-3 weeks for shipping.)

Frames:
Currently, I make one style of frame in two different species of wood, maple and walnut. Each frame has contrasting corner splines made from maple or walnut, both for strength purposes and visual appeal. I make all of the frames by hand in my small woodshop. Frames are available on a special order basis only- if interested please contact me for pricing.
